What are Implant Dentures?

In contrast to normal dentures that rest on the gums and occasionally need to be held in place with adhesive, implant dentures are attached to titanium posts that have joined with the jawbone itself. Having strong, sturdy roots gives your new teeth additional stability as well as bite force that’s almost on par with natural teeth. You can either get fixed dentures that permanently stay in place, or you can get removable overdentures that can be removed.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Since fixed implant dentures stay attached to the implants at all times, you don’t have to worry about taking them out for cleanings. In fact, you can brush and floss your new teeth as if they were your natural ones.

Removable Implant Dentures

An overdenture is designed to snap onto implants with the help of small attachments. You’ll need to take out your dentures on a regular basis in order to clean them thoroughly and to brush your gums. We may be able to retrofit your traditional dentures into overdentures depending on the circumstances.

The Implant Denture Procedure

If you still have teeth in the affected arch, they’ll need to be extracted first. You may also require bone grafts to restore the jaw if it has already started to deteriorate. Once the necessary preparations have been made, the implant placement surgery can begin. This process is handled by an outside specialist so that you can rest assured that a true expert is handling your smile. It will take several weeks – sometimes months – for the implants to fuse with the jaw, and afterwards we’ll handle the process of designing and placing the actual dentures.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

The ideal candidate for implant dentures:

  • Has already lost most of their teeth.
  • Has a jawbone strong enough to support implants.
  • Is free of gum disease and other health issues that impact healing.
  • Does not smoke.

You might still be eligible for implants even if you don’t fully meet the above criteria. We can discuss the type of precautions that will need to be taken during a consultation.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

  • Modern dentures are already designed to look as lifelike as possible, and when attached to implants they’ll feel natural as well.
  • You can eat practically anything you want thanks to the stability of implants.
  • Implants stimulate the jawbone and stop it from breaking down, meaning your dentures won’t lose their fit over time.

You can take care of fixed implant dentures the same way you take care of your natural teeth.
