Can I Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Veneers are an easy way to transform your smile without having to wait months or even years for Invisalign or traditional metal braces to move your teeth into the correct position. They can correct chips, cracks, gaps, minor alignment problems, misshapen teeth, and discoloration to give your pearly whites a more appealing look. Veneers are also highly stain-resistant, but will drinking your morning coffee leave your new smile with unsightly stains? Read on to learn if a hot cup of joe can discolor your new smile.

Can I Still Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Out of all of the cosmetic dental treatments, you could get, veneers are the most stain-resistant. Veneers are made from dental-grade porcelain, which is nonporous. This means that stains can’t seep into them like they can with your natural teeth. With that being said, veneers aren’t completely immune to staining. They can become discolored over time if you continually expose them to dark or highly-pigmented foods and beverages, like coffee. Smoking or using other tobacco products can also cause them to become discolored.

4Tips to Keep Coffee from Staining Your Veneers

Though there’s a chance that your morning coffee could leave stains on your porcelain veneers, some ways to lessen the chances of this happening include:

  • Limit stain-causers – Limit the amount of coffee, tea, dark sodas, red wine, berries, and other dark or highly-pigmented foods and drinks that you consume. You can also consume drinks through a straw to limit the amount of contact they have with your smile.
  • Rinse – After you have a cup of coffee or any other stain-causing foods or drinks, rinse your mouth out with water. This will keep the food or drink from sitting on your teeth for long periods.
  • Avoid tobacco – Cigarettes and other tobacco products are notorious for staining teeth. Cut the use of these products out of your life to keep your smile looking brighter for longer.
  • Practice good dental hygiene – Even if you don’t have veneers, good oral hygiene is key to keeping your smile healthy. Brush for two minutes in the morning and after dinner with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. You should also floss at least once per day, preferably after your last meal or before bed.

Just like with your natural smile, it’s important to take good care of your veneers. This will keep them functioning as intended and ensure that they continue to give you a gorgeous grin!
