What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns can be used to restore a severely decayed, damaged, or broken tooth to its natural size, shape, function, and appearance. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over your natural tooth once the damaged pieces have been removed and reshaped. Because our crowns are made from natural-looking porcelain, you don’t have to sacrifice appearance for improved oral health and function.

The Dental Crown Process

Getting a dental crown is a relatively straightforward process. It can usually be completed in just two visits to the dental office. The first step involves taking a look at the area to confirm that a dental crown is the best solution for you. Then, a thin layer of enamel needs to be removed. This creates room for the dental crown to fit comfortably in the mouth and appear natural. An impression is then taken and sent to the dental lab where your crown will be crafted.

In the meantime, you will be given a temporary crown. This will keep your prepared tooth safe and help you get used to how your new crown will feel. Once your restoration is ready, you can return to the dental practice where it will be adhered to your tooth using special dental cement.
